What is Comet
What is Comet-
The comet is
a small celestial body that orbits the Sun. Comets are made up of ice, dust,
and rocky material.
When a comet approaches
the Sun, the heat causes the ice to vaporize, forming a glowing coma which is
around the comet's nucleus and often a tail that points away from the Sun due
to the solar wind.
The main parts of
a comet include-
(1) Nucleus- The solid,
central part of the comet composed mainly of ice and dust.
(2) Coma- The nebulous
envelope around the nucleus, formed when the comet's ice begins to vaporize.
(3) Tail- Streams of gas
and dust that are pushed away from the comet by the Sun's radiation and solar
wind. The tail always points away from the Sun.
Comets are like dirty snowballs because of their composition. They are
remnants from the early solar system, offering clues about its formation and
evolution.
The Comets originate in
two main regions-
(1) Kuiper Belt- A
region beyond the orbit of Neptune, where many short-period comets originate.
(2) Oort Cloud- A
distant spherical shell surrounding the solar system, where long-period comets
are believed to come from.
Comets have been
observed and recorded by various cultures throughout history, often seen as
omens or significant astronomical events.
